Grosvenor Museum's clothes swap

25 August 2021

Fancy a new outfit without spending a single penny? The Grosvenor Museum is hosting a free clothes swap on Saturday 25 September, as part of the latest exhibition, 'Curated Closet'. Bring the clothes you no longer wear and trade them for something different.

Old clothes can be dropped off and exchanged between 11am and 4pm at the Museum. Clothes for all ages, shapes, sizes and genders are welcome

Councillor Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council said: "Not only is there a chance to refresh your wardrobe, but also visit the 'Curated Closet' exhibition, highlighting items from the Grosvenor Museum's extensive costume collection, and to learn about sustainable fashion."

To take part:
  • Clothes must be clean and in good condition. Items will be checked on the door.
  • Items that are well-worn, faded, personalised, damaged, or in poor condition will not be accepted.
  • Max. 10 items per person may be brought. Five to eight items are recommended.
  • Swaps are one-for-one, independent of brands, labels etc.
  • Children's clothes are welcome.
  • Shoes, bags, and accessories are welcome. Shoes must come in matching pairs and sizes. Worn earrings are not accepted.
  • Underwear is not accepted.
  • Unused tickets cannot be reimbursed, although they may be transferred to any future swaps.
Added Councillor Gittins: "Clothes swaps are good for your wardrobe and even better for the environment. The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world with three out of every five items ending up in landfill within a year of purchase."

For the safety and comfort of visitors and staff the museum encourages the use of face coverings and using the hand sanitiser stations, available in the museum foyer.

Visitors may be asked to wait for entry to maintain social distancing. No booking is required, just turn up on the day. If you'd like to arrange to drop-off clothing in the run-up to the event, contact:

Curated Closet is at the Grosvenor Museum, gallery one until 5 December. The story of fashion is all about how people embraced the times, altering their fashion depending on wars, recessions and pandemics to suit the materials that were readily available.

The Grosvenor Museum, 27 Grosvenor Street, Chester, CH1 2DD. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am to 5pm (last admission at 4.15pm). Sunday 1pm to 4pm (last admission at 3.15pm). The Museum is closed on Monday. Visit:
