Festival of Hope takes over Winsford subway

17 August 2020

Work starts on Saturday 15 August on a new mural painting ‘A Place to Be Proud Of’ by Liverpool based street artist Neil Keating in the Winsford pedestrian subway running under the A54 next to Winsford library.  The subway will be closed from the 15 to 28 August.

As part of the closure Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Street Care Team will also undertake general maintenance work on the subways for its reopening.

The street art has been commissioned by the Winsford Young Producers, a group of young people from Winsford.

Councillor Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council said: “The young producers behind the Festival of Hope were inspired to include the underpass in their Festival plans by their sense of pride for Winsford and a desire to  create a place people could be proud of, the installation will explore the town’s less discussed heritage, and draws on the things that make the producers hopeful about their town’s future.

“There will be a short period of inconvenience whilst the underpass is closed but I’m sure everyone will agree that it will be worth it as the area is transformed.”

The subway installation is part of the Festival of Hope, created by Winsford Young Producers. The group of young people from Winsford have been supported by West Cheshire Museums to produce this pioneering festival that places young people at the heart of design, making, programming and production.  The entire festival has been created by Winsford Young Producers and offers a programme that celebrates creativity, heritage and most importantly hope.

Since the Coronavirus pandemic the challenges for the festival grew, but undaunted the group has adapted to produce a local and unique festival.

The Subway will re-open on Friday 28 August in time for the launch of the Festival of Hope over the bank holiday weekend. For more information visit the Festival of Hope website.
