Cheshire West and Chester Council runners up at Council of the Year Awards

5 November 2021

Last night, Cheshire West and Chester Council were runners up at the Council of the Year Awards.

Hosted by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC), the award recognised the Council for having the most learning and inspiration to offer the rest of local government.

Cheshire West and Chester Council was able to demonstrate a sustained, strong performance, innovation, and excellent leadership across a broad spectrum of its work, including in terms of its Covid-19 response.

The judges, who received a large volume of high standard entries, acknowledged Cheshire West and Chester Council due to the quality of its work with communities and evidence that the Council is doing the best for the borough.

Council Leader Councillor Louise Gittins said: “To even be shortlisted as Council of the Year in these awards is a fantastic achievement for our borough.

“Over the last 18 months, we as a community, have responded to a huge range of challenges – including a global pandemic and supporting people through the worst flood event ever experienced in Cheshire West and Chester. Throughout that time, we have also continued to make significant progress against the wider priorities of our local population, in areas such as climate change, poverty, social care and regeneration."

“All the way through, our borough’s Play Your Part vision has been at the heart of a truly collective, community response. The past year has never been about the Council and our partner organisations doing what we feel has been required on our own. It has been about local people coming together to tackle shared challenges together. Harnessing the skills, insight and energy from across Cheshire West and Chester; looking after each other and emerging from Covid-19 in an even better place than we were before."

“To be one of only four shortlisted Councils for the LGC Council of the Year is a fantastic tribute to the hard work, commitment and togetherness of everyone. This is recognition for the borough, not just the Council, and we would like to thank everyone for their incredible efforts over the last 18 months. We can all be incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made together and will continue to make as we build an even stronger, fairer and greener borough for us all.”
