Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Hello resident,
please see below some current scams.  Information supplied by Halton Trading Standards.
Scam car tax emails
Halton Trading Standards wants to warn residents about scam vehicle tax payment emails. Residents have been receiving emails titled ‘Your Payment DVLA Gov.uk vehicle tax has failed invoice’. The emails state they are ‘Strictly Private and Confidential’ and claim that the recipients have 5 working days to complete a payment for their car tax renewal. The email goes on to state if the recipients fails to do this, their data will be passed to a debt collection agency.
This is a scam, it has all the hallmarks of a scam, such a forcing the recipients to make a quick decision (by having a short deadline), stating it is confidential (so you don’t discuss it with friends and family) and finally stating there will be financial/legal consequences if they fail to fact.

Disconnecting your internet scam
Halton Trading Standards have received information that consumers in Halton are again being targeted by bogus telephone calls threatening to disconnect their internet.
The calls are automated and state they have detected fraudulent activity on the consumers internet connection and it will be disconnected. It urges the consumer to press 1 on their telephone keypad and it is highly likely they will then ask for the consumers personal details and/or ask them to make a payment. This is a scam, please hang up the phone.

HMRC scam calls
Halton Trading Standards have been made aware of an automated phone call scam which tells residents HMRC is filing a lawsuit against them for non-payment of tax, and to press one to speak to a caseworker to make a payment. The call goes on to state you will arrested if you fail to pay. We can confirm this is a scam and you should end the call immediately.
This scam has been widely reported and often targets elderly and vulnerable people.

If you or somebody you know has been caught out by a scam or fraud please contact one of Halton Trading Standards specialist officers, Linda or Sue on 0151 511 8785 or 0151 511 8775, who are already working with people in Halton who have lost thousands of pounds to scams.
