Scam alert  Warning from Trading Standards:
scam phone call pretending to be from Amazon

A Halton resident received five phone calls on Friday morning (13th December) pretending to be from Amazon. The caller used a withheld number and told the resident that the call was about the closure of his account. On each occasion the resident, who does not have an Amazon account, terminated the call. There is little doubt that if he had stayed on the phone the caller would have asked for his card details in order to renew his Amazon Prime account.
This call is a scam. The scammers know that at this time of year lots of people are focussed on buying gifts for Christmas, some will be relying on the quick delivery associated with an Amazon Prime account. They are hoping that people will react quickly and pay the 'renewal fee' so that they don't lose the benefit of the guaranteed delivery times during the last shopping days before Christmas.
If you receive a phone call, text or email from Amazon asking you to change your password, update your banking information or change/confirm your account details, exercise caution. Don't click on any links or phone any numbers they provide you with. Instead, go to the website and log into your Amazon account to make any changes.
If you or somebody you know has been caught out by a fraud please contact one of our specialist officers, Linda or Sue on 0151 511 8785 or 0151 511 8775, who are already working with people in Halton who have lost thousands of pounds to scams.
If you need advice on anything else please contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline  or 03454 04 05 06
