Home security - protecting our vulnerable residents

Alert message sent 22/02/2019 16:32:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Hi all,

It has been brought to our attention that an individual impersonated a “nurse”, to gain entry into an elderly resident’s property, pointing out the items in his property. Thankfully, the resident informed the “nurse” that he’d have company arriving soon, therefore she left swiftly after that.
This alert is not for panic, but to urge residents to speak to their loved ones, and ensure nothing similar to this situation, has occurred to them. If so: please report to 101 and contact PCSO Sophie Jebb Bowman on Sophie.jebb@cheshire.pnn.police.uk so I can provide reassurance and helpful security tips moving forward.
A gentle reminder, for those in a profession who visits vulnerable residents to please always wear your ID badge. Further to this, here is some advice to protecting yourself:
  • Always ask to see ID, BEFORE allowing them entry – identify the photo and name of company. If still unsure: ask for the company number so you can contact the manager.
  • Prior to knowing you’ll have repeat visitors, ask the manager for EVERY details of staff on their register, and keep this with you for your own reassurance.
  • When answering the door, ensure your other door is fully locked and windows shut, to deter any chance of there being another person awaiting to gain entry, whilst your occupied at the front/or back.
  • If possible: CCTV can be useful at the entrance of your property.
  • If possible: retrieve vehicle details if suspicious behaviour occurs (do not put yourself in danger to attain this).
If you could share this with your loved ones. There will also be print outs of this information left at Alsager Library & Alsager Community Support Centre on Wednesday March 6th for you to take home:
1: Home security: “Healthcare professionals regularly visiting your property” (the above info).
2: Home security: “Cold callers”.
3: Home security: “Who to contact & steps to take following suspicious activity”.
All of us as a community, can ensure we look out for our vulnerable members of Alsager. Please remember 101 to report and contact Sophie.jebb@cheshire.pnn.police.uk, so I can provide reassurance moving forward.
Thank you Alsager for your continued support! Image result for thank you
