Find out what's happening near you during 'Fun Palaces' weekend at Cheshire West Libraries

25 September 2019

Cheshire West and Chester Libraries are once again joining 300+ ‘Fun Palaces’ across the UK, which will be filled with free and fun activities, celebrating culture in our community - and you’re invited.

Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing, Councillor Louise Gittins said: “’Fun Palaces’ is an ongoing campaign with an annual weekend of events each October.  They bring together the cultural skills of those in local communities for others to learn and enjoy.  There is such a huge list of activities on offer at this year’s events at six of our libraries across the borough. I'm pleased we’ve been able to increase the number of Fun Palaces to include Frodsham and Winsford this year.

“There’s something for everyone, so come along and discover something new in your library.”

There will be Fun Palaces at the libraries in Ellesmere Port, Frodsham, Neston, Northwich, Chester's Storyhouse and Winsford on Saturday 5 October, and there will be a whole variety of interactive activities.

At Ellesmere Port Library from 10am to 1pm a long list of activities will include fun science experiments, noodlecraft, a photography based workshop, mini volcanoes, women’s self-defence, illuminated manuscripts, LEGO competition, children’s crafts, flower arranging, slime, marshmallow towers, Viking crafts, family history research, canasta and whist, dressing up, refreshments, console games and a photo booth.
At Frodsham Library from 9.30am to 1pm join in a variety of workshops including patch-working and card-making, plus crazy crafts for the youngsters and messy play for the little ones. Create your own digital animation or become a mad scientist with Molecular Marty.

For sports fans there will be lots of activities in Brio’s sports hall including new age curling and some fun, family games. PCSO Neil Buckley will be calling in to keep the peace, as well as the amazing performer and storyteller Mama G.  There’s also face painting and balloon art, with refreshments to keep everyone going throughout the action packed morning.

At Neston Library between 9.30am and 5pm you will find a huge range of craft activities such as making a massive cardboard Elmer or just decorate a biscuit or two. Become an architect or structural engineer during the castle-making workshop. Immerse yourself in a drama with the Little Actors Theatre or become a mad scientist with the Institute of Physics and Molecular Marty (Fun Science). Learn many new skills including hair braiding and nail art. Test your piloting skills and try and land a plane in the flight simulator. Have your face painted and see if you can out-perform the wonderful Mama G - all whilst listening to some amazing music from the Hadlow Green Singers, 64 N’Ukes and Two Penny Piece. The Selfie Saloon will also be available for some refreshments and a photo or two (of course).

At Storyhouse in Chester the Fun Palace returns between 10am to 2pm, with a focus on aspiration.  Learn more about jobs in the science industry - for all ages. The day will include science experiments, arts and crafts, and even a real-life policeman and a fire fighter who is bringing along a fire engine.

In Northwich Library from 12 to 7pm, you can dance, create or just listen. There will be so much going on to make their Fun Palace bigger and better than last year. Friends from Transition Northwich will have their apple press outside all afternoon, ready to make fresh apple juice. There will be mini dance workshops with Noodle Performing Arts and Cheshire Dance, poetry from John Lindley and recycled crafts with Kier, just to name a few.  Later in the day you can come along to the free Live Lounge and listen to local talented musicians before watching the amazing Insectes by Sarruga procession at 7.30pm as part of the Now Northwich festival.  Expect the unexpected…

In Winsford Library between 10am to 2pm immerse yourself in free creative workshops and demonstrations by artists and makers for everyone.   Make a bird box, enjoy riding a bike to make a fruit smoothie, ice a gingerbread man or make your own slime at the slime station. Get involved in batik or making planets or card craft.  Learn about 3D printing and have a go at Hedgehog book folding. You can even watch a make-up demonstration or relax listening to live music whilst enjoying refreshments.
