Cheshire West town shortlisted in high streets funding bid

8 July 2019

Cheshire West and Chester Council has moved a step closer in its plans to rejuvenate Winsford town centre.

It was one of a select number of UK towns to reach the next stage in a bid for significant investment from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.

The Council will now develop and present a full business case to Government, outlining why the town should receive the capital investment and how the money will be spent. A final decision is expected later in the year.

Councillor Richard Beacham, Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Growth at Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “We are really excited about the future of Winsford. The Council is committed to the regeneration of the town and we welcome the opportunity to bid for more funding to achieve these plans.

“Winsford is a vibrant town, proud of its history, but passionate about its future. We will work with local people to develop a new town centre where people can live, shop, access public services, and spend their leisure time.

“It is welcoming news that we have been shortlisted at this stage of the bidding process. If our bid is ultimately successful, an investment in Winsford from the Future High Streets Fund will support our existing plans to enhance the high street and the town centre.”

The Council will receive up to £150,000 resource funding grant from Government to help in the development of our business case.

Cheshire West has been working to regenerate the town centre since it bought Winsford Cross Shopping Centre last year. It has been working with partners on plans to deliver a new and improved town centre. Residents will have the opportunity to share their views when a public consultation begins later this summer.

The regeneration of Winsford town centre forms part of the wider £200m investment the Council is hoping to unlock in the area.
