The Lord Mayor of the City of Chester has written to express deepest sympathy to those affected by the attacks in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Lord Mayor, Alex Black has sent a letter to Mayoress Bernadine Rose Senanayake of the Colombo Municipal Council on behalf of the people of Chester after at least 359 people were killed and over 500 more injured on Easter Sunday.

He said: "Can I, on behalf of the City of Chester, England and myself, send our deepest sympathy and extend our sincere condolences to the victims, the injured and their families following the heinous attacks which unfolded in your city and at Negombo and Batticaloa on Easter Sunday.
I was shocked and saddened to learn of the series of incidents which has caused such large casualties.

Words cannot express what your country must be feeling in these painful days. The attacks on innocent families, including children, is truly appalling and shocking, especially as they were all together celebrating Easter Sunday and their holidays.

The City of Chester is united with you in your grief. We as a city, and as a nation, stand shoulder to shoulder with our friends in Sri Lanka and other counties affected by terrorism attacks, to both confront and ultimately defeat those who wish to attack our liberty and freedom.

Books of condolences have been opened and candles have been lit in Chester Town Hall in memory of those who lost their lives and who were injured."
